endless highway

we bactracked the 20 miles from our hotel, cool and clear, but legs feeling a tad heavy, and a late night map session left me a little tired. my shepard, mike had some good thoughts for avoiding some serious climbing, local knowledge going to be big help the next few days.
we moved out at an easy pace, single file on the shoulder, az. has rumble strips on road and they are brutel. we got outside of town and started a gradual climb that went on forever and was still going when i bailed at 42 miles and a 1000 vertical. mike turned and road the 22 back to town, going to be an early night, going to new mexico tomorrow!
be well,

  1. Steph,

42 miles with heavy legs is a good day… and way better than this snail:

A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. Three years later, there’s a knock on the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says “What the hell was that all about?”

  2. Survive and advance Steph. You are doing great. Channel Mt Ventoux experience during the climbs. Allez Allez!

  3. You’re doing great. You’ll be crossing into your third state tomorrow. I’ve been in Los Cruces and Silver City before but I haven’t been on your route so I can’t tell you about the road surface. Just a little heads up for Texas. Most of the roads are chip-sealed (stones in tar). I wish you the best and please keep hydrated throughout the day. Praying for you.

  4. Steph, you are now heading into the longest hardest climbs of your entire journey. Don’t worry if you don’t get in many miles for the next several days. I’m hoping I can ride with you once you get a little closer to El Paso, so don’t blow yourself up on those climbs!

  5. Steph, Lincoln, and the rest of the SC team,
Peter Dyke, Dave Falter and I are looking forward to catching you west of El Paso this Friday eve.
We can’t wait to join the ride and head into west Texas.
You guys are doing an amazing job…keep up the effort and be safe.

  6. Amazing to read up on your journey. We’re thinking of you! Go Mark! – Betty & Brad
p.s. Just checking that you got the Clif Bars, etc. Hope they’re helping to fuel your legs and mind across the miles. Let me know what more we can provide!

  7. Getting over the climbs is worth the ride on the flats! Hang in there Mark- you are doing a great job! Stay safe and enjoy the ride!

  8. Way to go Mr. Stephan!! The Junior Board is cheering you on. You are such an insipration to us. Keep up the amazing work! Molly

The Davis family is in awe of you! Keep it up and we’ll keep cheering! ox Susan
